The Bridge review

Posted : 11 years, 8 months ago on 6 March 2013 10:26 (A review of The Bridge)

I always like to see Kim Bodnia, but this series is trying so hard to be The Killing, and fails miserably. The character development is particularly poor - they do things that just seem to come out of nowhere. And there are lots of plot holes and logical problems, for instance Bodnia jumping in the sack with a witness just after A. having a vasectomy, and B. being kicked so hard in the balls that he has to go to hospital. I don't think so.

Miller's Crossing [1991] review

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 17 August 2011 12:09 (A review of Miller's Crossing [1991])

Nice transfer on a DVD-9. Extra features are ok but without much input from the Coens, as usual.

Newsfront [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] review

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 17 August 2011 12:06 (A review of Newsfront [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC])

Actually NTSC Region 0, not 1. This DVD is a real labour of love from Blue Underground. The transfer is great, and the extras are much more interesting than the usual fare, particularly the one about the project to restore vanishing newsreel footage for the archives (edited to look like a newsreel). Great stuff.

The Hit (REGION 2) (PAL) [Dutch Import] review

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 17 August 2011 11:17 (A review of The Hit (REGION 2) (PAL) [Dutch Import])

Until the Criterion edition came out, this was about the only way to get a decent copy of this little gem of a film. It's marked as 4:3 on the case but is actually 16:9 letter box. The transfer is mediocre from a fairly dirty print, but is quite watchable. There are no extras.

Body Heat review

This is marked on the case as "Regular" aspect ratio (4:3) but is in fact 16:9.

Skeletons review

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 17 August 2011 10:51 (A review of Skeletons )

This would be a nice package of a great little film - it's got a very informative making of, and some fun deleted scenes, but the transfer of the film itself is godawful - blurred and desaturated, with lots of digital artefacts. This is a real shame as the cinematography is really quite good and this transfer does not do it justice. Perhaps it was shot on DV?
